DO LED LIGHTS ATTRACT INSECTS?
How many
outdoor summer dinners have been completely ruined by that swarm of insects
that flutters around the lights? How many times have we had to wait in the dark
to be able to close the windows so that the insects wouldn't fly in? Insects,
in fact, are endowed with a particular sensitivity to light, which leads them
to be attracted or rejected. Some, such as cockroaches, instinctively run away
from every ray of light, looking for the first dark corner; others, like moths,
mosquitoes or gnats, are attracted to light and fly near it, often even at the
cost of their own life, since they risk being killed by the heat of the light
bulb. This phenomenon is called phototaxis, that is the correlation between
movement and light, and negative phototaxis is defined when its research
consists in the refusal of light and phototaxis. This still does not explain
the reason for this correlation. Light is, for some insects, a source of
orientation: in nature, in fact, they move thanks to the faint light of the
moon and stars and fly while maintaining a certain angle with respect to this
light. Artificial light appears instead as an inconstant factor invests them
on all their sides and prevents them from maintaining an orientation.
But the question that has occupied scholars recently is different: is there a different
reaction of insects to different types of light? Studies presented at the AAAS
(American Association for the Advancement of Science) conference found the
effect of different types of light sources on insects. According to this data,
published in the journal Science, these animals are more attracted to
incandescent bulbs, while the number of insects that comes close to LED lamps
or so-called "bug lights", the lights specially designed to be
unwelcome to mosquitoes and gnats.
The LED
lights emit neither UV nor heat, elements clearly attributable to sunlight, and
are therefore less attractive to insects. If you then choose cold light bulbs,
characterized by a brightness more tending to blue than yellow, you can further
reduce the number of attracted insects. Obviously, this is not a repellent and
does not involve the total absence of these annoying animals, but it is
certainly an element of relief for those who want to enjoy the summer evenings
outdoors. The LED lights do not, therefore, have the only advantage of providing
a precise brightness with greater energy savings, but they are also useful with
regard to insects, which are confused in smaller quantities by their
brightness.
